Culinary Scholarships Awarded to Stratford University Students

(WASHINGTON, DC) June 21, 2003—The National Capital Area Chapter of The American Institute of Wine & Food (AIWF) awarded education scholarships to Wilbert Parker of Oxon Hill, MD and Cheryl Englen of Potomac Falls, VA, both culinary students at Stratford University, Falls Church, VA.

In support of its mission to promote education and understanding of food and wine, the chapter presents each student with a gift of $500 toward their Stratford University culinary arts program tuition and a year's membership with full benefits in the AIWF.

"Stratford University is delighted that two of our students have been recognized for their diligence in the program and their service to the community," says Dan Traster, dean of culinary arts and hotel management. "This scholarship will help them achieve their goals."

In addition to maintaining an excellent GPA, Mr. Parker works at a karate school with children and cooks for needy senior citizens on weekends. He learned cooking from his mother and loves to cook. His ultimate goal is to own a restaurant. Ms. Englen is a member of the Stratford University honor society and a mother of one (soon to be two). She sought to turn her passion into a career by catering for friends and family and in March 2003 decided to get the formal training she needed to get ahead. Her goal is to become an event planner and chef.

Karen Cathey, chairman, National Capital Area Chapter, AIWF states: "We couldn't be more thrilled to have such exemplary students receive our new scholarships. Our mission is fulfilled trifold: we support an educational facility, we support individual students, and all of them in turn will spread the passion about food and wine. We look forward to having Wilbert and Cheryl become active members of our chapter."

Established in 1981 by Julia Child, Robert Mondavi, and others, The American Institute of Wine & Food is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to understanding and celebrating the pleasures, benefits, and traditions of the table. The National Capital Area Chapter has over 400 individual members, half of whom are food and wine professionals. For more information about the chapter, visit www.aiwf.org/dc.
